Hitech GP’s Paul Aron edged Van Amersfoort Racing’s Enzo Fittipaldi in the Formula 2 qualifying at the Hungaroring to achieve the second pole position of his rookie season.

DAMS’ Jak Crawford and Juan Manuel Correa were first to set a laptime, but Rodin Motorsport’s Zane Maloney soon bettered them setting a fastest lap of 1m30.515s.

Invicta Racing’s Gabriel Bortoleto lapped faster than Maloney, topping the charts once everyone had completed his first timed lap.

Campos Racing’s Pepe Marti spun at turn 11 and stalled as he attempted a second timed lap on the first set of soft tyres. The session was then red-flagged with 19 minutes remaining on the clock.

The track went green again soon after, but no representative laps were completed in the minutes that followed. Maloney did an out-lap on the hard tyres, while Bortoleto and Campos’ Isack Hadjar went out on used soft tyres. The Red Bull junior had a snap at turn 11, but managed to keep the control of his car and returned to the pit-lane.

With 12 minutes left, all the drivers but Trident’s Richard Verschoor and Roman Stanek returned to the track fitting a new set of the soft tyre compound.

Fittipaldi was first on track and rose to the top of the times after bettering Bortoleto’s benchmark by 0.173 seconds. However, it was Aron who claimed the pole by 0.068 seconds over Fittipaldi. Hadjar was third fastest while Bortoleto, who improved his laptime by only 0.032 seconds, was fourth.

Taking too much kerb at the entry of turn 12 hurt MP Motorsport Franco Colapinto’s chances of improving at the end of the session, as he run wide losing time at the exit of the corner. Meanwhile, Verschoor rounded off the top 10 and took reversed grid pole, having completed his lap later than most of the grid.

The soft tyre compound proved itself as a one-lap tyre, with no one improving on his second attempt on the same set.
