McLaren junior Alex Dunne has secured a step up to Formula 2 for this season with Rodin Motorsport alongside his first official appearance in Formula E.
Having become a reserve driver for McLaren’s Formula E team, Dunne will be among the rookies taking part in a dedicated practice session at Jeddah next Friday.
His attention will then turn to his maiden F2 campaign, confirmation of which comes after he joined Rodin for all three days of post-season testing in Abu Dhabi last December.
The Irishman steps up to F2 after just one season in FIA Formula 3, which he spent with MP Motorsport and finished 14th in the championship after taking a pair of sprint race podiums at Barcelona and Monza.
Dunne was previously British Formula 4 champion with Hitech in 2022 when he also finished second to Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Italian F4 for US Racing. He stepped up to GB3 the following season with Hitech and finished runner-up to Rodin’s Callum Voisin.
“I’m looking forward to the upcoming season and thankful for everyone’s support in getting me to this stage – I can’t wait to hit the ground running,” Dunne said.
He will team-mate to fellow F3 graduate Christian Mansell at Rodin.
“We are delighted to welcome Alex to Rodin Motorsport,” said Benn Huntingford, Rodin sporting director and F2 team manager.
“Alex’s talent, dedication, and passion for racing align perfectly with our team’s values and ambitions. We are confident that he will make a significant impact in the upcoming season and know that he is capable of enjoying a really great season with the us.”
Confirmation of Dunne’s drive leaves just two seats on the F2 grid to be filled, at ART Grand Prix and Van Amersfoort Racing – as occupied by Victor Martins and Rafael Villagomez through last season and in testing.
