HMD Motorsports has moved its Indy Lights operation to run in Formula Regional Americas for 2020.
Last week, it was announced that the Indy Lights season would not go ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Road to Indy CEO Dan Andersen told Formula Scout that several of the Indy Lights teams were looking at running in other series, with F3R Americas and Indy Pro 2000 the most likely options.
HMD has become the first team to commit to moving to a new series, and is already in possession of two Ligier regional Formula 3 chassis to run its Lights drivers David Malukas and Santiago Urrutia.
The F3R Americas champion this year will receive a scholarship to enter Indy Lights in 2021, where HMD will be returning to that year.
“As they say there is a bright side to everything and with the cancellation of the Indy Lights 2020 season, I’m glad to able to continue racing this year [in F3R Americas],” said Malukas.
“It’s always nice to get into a car that you’ve never driven in before and to also compete in a new series. I am gutted about the Indy Lights season being cancelled as the team and I have worked hard and were looking forward to the year.”
Malukas finished sixth in his rookie Lights season in 2019, while Urrutia was twice a runner-up in the Lights points before switching to touring cars last year. He was set to make a surprise return to the series this season with HMD.
There’s no word on whether the team’s third signed driver, Canadian IP2000 graduate Antonio Serravalle, will also be making the move to F3R Americas. Serravalle has suggested he already has a replacement drive in place though.
