British Formula 4 Rookie Cup champion Jack Doohan has joined Double R Racing for the 2019 Euroformula Open season, which the Red Bull junior is expected to combine with?Asian Formula 3.
The 16-year-old Australian has spent the off-season racing in the Asian F3 Winter Series and the MRF Challenge, getting podiums in both, after spending his first year in car racing competing in British, ADAC and Italian F4.
Doohan, son of five-time MotoGP champion Mick, became a member of the Red Bull Junior Team after two successful international karting campaigns in 2017. He was placed alongside fellow junior Dennis Hauger at Arden in British F4 last year.
?I?m really excited and fortunate to be racing in Euroformula Open this year as a rookie,” Doohan said.
?It has proved to bring some very strong drivers through the ranks and is looking to be pretty competitive this season, so I?ll be giving it everything I?ve got to come out on top.
?Double R is a very well-known and successful team which I am very lucky to be working with this year. They have a great group of people working with them, who I get along with very well, so I can?t wait to get started.
“I completed two tests with Double R at the end of last year to learn more about the car and team, which went quite well, so I?m looking forward to getting the season underway.?
Doohan is notably the driver making the biggest leap from British F4, with the top three in the championship all headed to the single-spec BRDC British F3 championship and Hauger switching to ADAC and Italian F4.
Double R is debuting in EF Open this year with HWA engines and is returning to continental F3 for the first time since racing in FIA European F3 in 2015. It did originally intend to join the championship last year, but delayed its entry by a year to coincide with EF Open becoming a multi-engine formula.
