Zak O’Sullivan wins postponed, shortened F2 sprint race at Spa

ART Grand Prix’s Zak O’Sullivan won a postponed and then shortened Formula 2 sprint race at Spa-Francorchamps.

Heavy rain meant the race had to be postponed from its scheduled time early in the afternoon and eventually started at 18:30 local time. However, it didn’t last long. After a few laps of racing, the race was neutralised to pick up the car of Campos Racing’s Pepe Marti and never resumed.

O’Sullivan held on to the lead at the start and took advantage of the better visibility to build an over-one-second gap to MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger in the opening lap.

Prema’s Ollie Bearman was the biggest mover in that first lap. He went from 14th place to eighth, which he gained by outbraking Campos Racing’s championship leader Isack Hadjar at the Bus Stop chicane.

The Ferrari junior and 2025 Haas Formula 1 driver gained yet another place on lap three of 18, following team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes junior headed down to Eau Rouge side by side with MP’s Franco Colapinto, who backed off as they went uphill.

The virtual safety car was deployed on lap three as the cars approached the halted Campos’ car of Marti. The Red Bull junior had risen from 16th to 13th position in the opening lap. However, he then hit mechanical woes and after driving through the pit-lane, he stopped on track in the way to Pouhon.

Marti’s car was cleared by lap six, but the safety car continued to lead the pack. The red flag was then waved the following lap and the race would not restart.

As per Formula 2’s sporting regulations article 6.5, only the top five finishing drivers will be awarded with points. Race leader O’Sullivan completed two laps under green flag conditions and the distance ran was between the 25% and the 50% of the total distance scheduled.
