Van Amersfoort Racing has signed Gustav Jonsson for a Formula 4 programme focused on the 2024 Euro 4 season.
The 17-year-old Swede already has category experience, having come 11th in the British F4 championship last year with Chris Dittmann Racing. He made the podium twice in that campaign and took one fastest lap, which was enough to top the Rookie Cup standings for car racing newcomers.
He began testing with VAR soon after the British F4 season ended, and was fastest in a test at Misano last November.
Prior to moving into single-seaters, Jonsson primarily karted in his home country, but made some European outings over his last two years in karting’s senior level. In 2022 he was 15th in Rotax Max Challenge’s Euro Trophy, 13th in the single-event Euro Golden Trophy and runner-up in the Swedish championship. In 2021 he was third in the standings at home.
“I am really excited to be joining VAR for the 2024 season,” said Jonsson. “We completed a series of tests at the end of 2023 together and we immediately performed well. This is a really important year in my career, and I fully believe in the team and think we have a chance to achieve great things together.”
He is the Dutch team’s third signing for Euro 4 alongside Alvise Rodella and Hiyu Yamakoshi, who have also been signed to race in the Italian F4 championship where Jonsson could make some appearances.
VAR looks forward to “writing the next chapter of success and achievement on the track” with Jonsson this year.
