French Formula 4 runner-up Yani Stevenheydens will make a sideways move for his main programme this year, as he joins MP Motorsport in Spanish F4.

The 18-year-old Belgian has already driven for MP in a Spanish F4 Winter Championship round, taking two eighth places, and he will contest the remaining two rounds too as well as the seven-round main season.

This is Stevenheydens’ third year in F4. In his rookie season in the French championship he claimed two wins and three other podiums, and as a sophomore he was victorious four times, claimed eight poles and was provisionally champion before a penalty handed out after the final race meant the crown went to Taito Kato. An appeal of the result was unsuccessful.

“I’m extremely happy to continue my single-seater journey with MP Motorsport”, said Stevenheydens.

“Today, the F4 Spanish championship is arguably the strongest of its kind, and MP is one of its leading teams. Last year, they were on top form, so combined with my knowledge of F4 that should translate into a very competitive season. I’ve already enjoyed my first experience with the team and look forward to building our relationship into a race-winning proposition.”

MP’s team principal Sander Dorsman added: “With the speed and racecraft that he has demonstrated in the French championship, he will be a strong addition to our team.”

There are now four drivers in MP’s Spanish F4 line-up, and the team plans to run even more. It is running six cars in the winter championship.
