Atlantic Racing Team’s Daniel Quimby won all three United States Formula 4 races at Mosport to close in on the points lead.
It remains a four-way title fight with one round to go, and US F4’s first trip to Canada since 2017 attracted six cars.
Crosslink/Kiwi Motorsport’s AGI Sport-supported driver Nicolas Stati topped practice, setting a 1m20.150s to lead team-mate Alex Crosbie by 0.153 seconds and Quimby by 0.155s. Connor Roberts was 0.473s behind in fourth, and Crosslink/Kiwi’s Barrett Wolfe completed a top five split by 0.631s. MLT Motorsports’ Lincoln Day missed the session.
Quimby lowered the pace to 1m19.529s in qualifying, going nine tenths of a second faster than Stati and Roberts. Crosbie was 1.449s off the pace in fourth, with Wolfe two seconds slower than Quimby and Day a further 1.9s slower than him.
Race one took placed on a wet track, with three formation laps so drivers could get used to the conditions. Crosbie struck mechanical trouble on one of those lap, and when the race actually began Day spun. Quimby kept his car on track up front, but had Stati on his tail due to the pace car being called out after Wolfe hit the turn 10 barriers.
The field remained behind the pace car until the chequered flag waved at the end of lap five, and half-points were awarded.
Stati had managed to set the fastest lap before racing was neutralised, which meant he started from pole for race two later on Saturday.
He held off Quimby and Roberts at first, with Crosbie gaining two places from sixth. On lap four, a mistake at turn 10 by Stati led to him losing the lead and once in second he had to focus on the next car behind rather than new leader Quimby.
Roberts only waited a lap before also passing points leader Stati, but had no answer to Quimby and finished 12.791s behind him. Crosbie got into third and spent the second half of the race filling Roberts’ mirrors.
Despite his big winning margin, Quimby only took the fastest lap by 0.268s and he shared the race three front row on Sunday with Crosbie. A lights-to-flag win followed, bringing his victory tally for the season up to five.
Crosbie was quickly relegated by Stati and Roberts, with the latter on new tyres. They proved advantageous once he was got into second place, and therefore clean air since Quimby was already up the road, and he escaped the battle for third.
Stati and Crosbie had an intense fight, decided by just 0.158s in Stati’s favour at the finish.
