The Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 championships will race in Melbourne next year in support of the Australian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 announced its 2024 calendar on Wednesday, with confirmation that the Australian GP – which runs on a temporary circuit around Melbourne’s Albert Park – will take place on March 24 as the third round of the season.

The calendars for F1’s two junior single-seater support series were not revealed at the same time, but the group behind the Australian GP put out their own announcement which mentioned the two.

“Returning to Australia in 2024 after a successful Albert Park debut in 2023 will be the F2 and F3 series, the two F1 feeder series with a number of young Australians on the grid,” read the event’s statement.

The trip to Melbourne at the start of this April marked the first time either series had raced in Australia, with it being the third round of the F2 season and the second round for FIA F3.

Next year’s Australian GP will be the third round of the 2024 F1 season, and F2 is in contention to be on the support bill of all three of those early-year events.

Following the cancellation of the Imola round in May due to flooding, this year’s F2 season consists of 13 rounds and there are nine rounds for FIA F3.

F2 and its predecessor GP2 (and sister GP2 Asia series) has raced before at 17 of the 24 tracks that appear on the 2024 F1 calendar, while FIA F3 and its predecessor GP3 has been at 12 of them. It is unlikely to have more than a 10-round schedule in 2024, particularly if the series’ cars are used at the non-championship Macau Grand Prix next year.
