Laurens Van Hoepen is looking to maximise his Trident team’s strong form in an impressive first full year in Formula 2 that has also included a Williams Formula 1 test.

Having spent the majority of its F2 campaigns struggling to compete at the front, 2026 has proven to be fruitful for Trident and Van Hoepen: he took two podiums in the opening three races and a pole position in Montreal, and lies eighth in the standings after six rounds.

“It’s been good. I mean, we were like really strong every race,” Van Hoepen said to Formula Scout. “Definitely had some missed opportunities. I think we could have been even more in front points-wise, but I mean, it’s been definitely a good start of the season.”

“We’ve been quick every round. We definitely also still have some work to do. I think we definitely need to still find some bits, but overall, I think great start and you just have to keep working.”

Van Hoepen’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed after he was handed his first outing in an F1 car by Williams.

Prior to round three Canada, the 20 year-old got the wheel in a private TPC (testing of previous car) day at the Hungaroring, an opportunity the Dutchman relished.

“That was really cool,” said Van Hoepen. “I’ve been dreaming of driving F1 cars since I was a little kid and then to drive out of the pits for the first time it’s something extremely special and really cool.”

“That was an incredible day and something I’ll definitely remember for a very long time. I think the main target was to learn as much as possible, which I think we had a good day of doing. We did a lot what we wanted to do, and  I think I adapted great and was quick.”

“Overall the way of working [with a team in] F1 was something really cool, something that you definitely learn a lot from because it’s so professional.”

In a recent interview with F1 media, Williams team principal James Vowles stated that Van Hoepen was on their radar amid the possibility of him joining the Grove based team’s academy.

“There’s a reason why we’re talking,” said Vowles who added that the Hungaroring test provided the team with “direct knowledge” to supplement Van Hoepen’s recent strong results.

Despite the compliments Van Hoepen remains focused on achieving the best results he can this year.

“Of course, it’s nice, but I think, again, my main job is just to focus on what I’m doing here in F2, making sure I do the best I can and just being up there up the front and then I’d say the rest will come.”
