Maya Weug will not build on her points-scoring rookie Formula Regional European Championship season from last year as she will be stepping back down to Formula 4 for 2024.
The Ferrari junior has signed with Prema to race in the all-female F1 Academy series, marking a return to the entry-level F4 category that she previously raced in through 2021 and ’22.
In her first spell in F4, Weug raced for the Prema-linked Iron Lynx team. She scored 36 points across two seasons in the Italian championship and she also did 12 races in the now defunct ADAC F4 championship.
The 19-year-old made the step up to FREC with KIC Motorsport, and scored 27 points to come 17th in the overall standings and third in the rookie classification.
“I’m super excited to get back on track this season,” said Weug. “I’m sure it will be a great season working together with such a prestigious team as Prema in the second year of an interesting category like F1 Academy. It’s a great honor to represent Ferrari again this season and I can’t wait to continue the hard work with the [Ferrari Driver] Academy and Prema to prepare the season the best way possible.”
Weug will be team-mate to sportscar star Doriane Pin, who recently became a Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 junior, and Tina Hausmann.
“We deeply respected Maya as a competitor, and we were always impressed by her potential and achievements,” said Prema’s team principal Rene Rosin.
“We are really delighted to finally get her on board for the second season of F1 Academy, and we think we will do a great job together. Our line-up is really promising, with three outstanding racers and the support of three great F1 teams. We are proud of the trust we received and cannot wait for the season to start.”
