R-ace GP’s points leader Martinius Stenshorne was fastest in Formula Regional European Championship practice at Mugello.
The morning session was interrupted straight away by Sainteloc Racing’s Lucas Medina getting stuck in the gravel at turn 14 on his outlap, and not appearing again after that, with the red flags out until the 10-minute mark in the 50-minute session.
Van Amersfoort Racing’s Kas Haverkort established a 1m52.323s benchmark after that, with Trident’s Roman Bilinski next best on 1m53.1339s after 15 minutes.
The pace then dropped significantly, with ART Grand Prix’s Charlie Wurz posting a 1m46.265s and team-mate Marcus Amand a 1m46.396s. Within a minute KIC Motorsport’s Maya Weug had then moved to the top with a 1m45.826s, and Prema’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli went second fastest.
Next to top the times was Bilinski, by 0.021 seconds, and he was followed across the line by Arden’s Joshua Duerken who set a 1m45.459s. Weug got within 0.060s of that on her next lap, then was shuffled back down to third as Monolite Racing’s Kirill Smal set a 1m45.336s.
Stenshorne was 0.008s slower as he moved into second place, only for team-mate Tim Tramnitz to utilise a slipstream from him to go top with a 1m45.074s.
Smal responded with a 1m44.899s, and Stenshorne got within 0.028s of the new benchmark but was then bettered by Tramnitz and Haverkort.
The pace was lowered further by Smal to 1m44.716s at the session’s halfway mark, then there was a prolonged period of track inactivity.
With nine minutes to go Haverkort set a 1m43.886s and three other drivers beat Smal, then Stenshorne moved to the top with a 1m43.766s. At the end he improved to 1m43.697s, with Haverkort just 0.023s slower and VAR’s Joshua Dufek 0.209s behind in third.
Monolite Racing’s Giovanni Maschio was the surprise pacesetter early on in FP2, with Trident’s Owen Tangavelou and Nikhil Bohra also spending time in first place before Stenshorne found his way to the top with a 1m45.700s set 15 minutes in.
Race Performance Motorsport’s Santiago Ramos bettered that by 0.043s with 15 minutes to go, then Weug went 0.391s faster than that with nine minutes left of practice.
A minute later she was down in sixth as the pace was lowered further, with Haverkort setting a 1m44.442s. Stenshorne returned to first place with two minutes to go, setting a 1m44.199s which would go unbeaten.
Prema’s Lorenzo Fluxa and Medina were the only drivers to actually set their personal bests in FP2 though, with everyone else going faster in FP1.
GT World Challenge Europe racer Konsta Lappalainen contested the two practice sessions with KIC Motorsport.
