Virtuosi Racing’s Jack Doohan ended day one of Formula 2’s Barcelona in-season test on top as he beat Kush Maini’s best laptime from the morning by almost 0.8 seconds.
Rodin Carlin’s Zane Maloney brought out the only red flag of the afternoon session half an hour in as he spun at the exit of turn seven.
It was Maloney’s team-mate Enzo Fittipaldi who topped the times with a 1m26.642s lap when the on-track action was halted. Meanwhile, other drivers had spent the early minutes embarking on race simulations.
The session resumed shortly afterwards, and DAMS’ Ayumu Iwasa claimed the top spot, bettering Fittipaldi’s benchmark by 0.060s.
Most of the cars returned to the pitlane at the end of the first hour of running, after a far busier start to the session compared to the morning one.
Fittipaldi reclaimed the fastest lap, breaking the 1m26s barrier by three tenths of a second while running on hard compound tyres. Prema’s Frederik Vesti also improved his pace to move up to second place as the session went past its second half.
Track temperature decreased with one hour to go, and several drivers took the track on a new set of soft tyres. Hitech GP’s Isack Hadjar was the first to top the times on that compound with a 1m25.459s lap, but Fittipalidi would again lower the overall benchmark to 1m24.810s.
A blistering lap with over half an hour remaining placed Doohan ahead of everyone by 0.324s.
Only Prema’s Ollie Bearman and Vesti were able to get close to Doohan’s fastest time. However, the Australian would improve again in the last 10 minutes to end the day almost half a second faster than Ferrari junior Bearman.
MP Motorsport and ART Grand Prix’ drivers devoted most of their track time to race simulations. Dennis Hauger was the driver with the most laps completed in the afternoon, with a total of 59. His team-mate Jehan Daruvala followed on 51, while ART GP Theo Pourchaire and Victor Martins clocked 50 laps each.
